Woodland School
Here at Streatley, long before others began Forest School or Bush crafting locally, we recognised the importance of the outdoors and nature on our wellbeing. Thankfully many more schools now recognise the health benefits, leadership opportunities, and they too are viewing it as a selling point for their school offer.
The best and the richest cupboard is roofed only by the sky. Margaret McMillan (c1925)
Miss Roberts (headteacher) has, throughout her career, always been involved in nature, clubs and charities linked to wildlife conservation. She studied child development as part of her specialism in Early Years which explored engagement, motivation and thinking. Her experience in Norway influenced her views on risk taking and risk assessment to ensure children progress in their outdoor skills and risk management. She has been part of Watch clubs, woodland learning, attended nature meetings and reserves to enjoy the benefits personally but to ensure young children (our future) value nature. As the leader of the school she has been the driving force for maximising learning opportunities outside, and she uses this drive to develop the recruitment of staff and volunteers here at Streatley.
When you visit Streatley Primary School you will be amazed at our site and where it sits. We are nestled in the hill alongside the National Trust sites Lardon Chase and The Holies (woodlands) surrounding us. The village of Streatley sits on the border with Goring, Oxfordshire. Here, the River Thames, the weir and Thames Path all link.
Over time staff, both new and old, have built up their confidence with using tools, ropes and fire with children. All staff are now willing and able to go out in all weathers. The only weather type that can change our plans is wind, this effects fire and tree safety.
We have a name for each day of the week should we go out on an adventure. Muddy Monday, Twiggy Tuesday, Welly Wednesday, Thermal Thursday and Fresh Air Friday. Our location means that many parents are already outdoorsy and support the school with appropriate layers and snoods. We have a large bank of kit, we ask the parents to provide wellies.
